The Miracle of the Tilma
When Juan Diego brought her request to the local bishop, Juan de Zumárraga, he was asked for a sign.
 
Mary instructed him to gather roses from the top of Tepeyac Hill - though it was winter. Miraculously, Castilian roses were blooming there. Juan Diego carried them in his tilma (a simple cloak made of cactus fibre). When he opened it before the bishop, the roses fell to the ground - and on the tilma was imprinted her image.
 
That miraculous image remains preserved today in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world.

Nearly five centuries later, the tilma has not decayed - something that continues to draw both devotion and scientific interest.

A Message Encoded in Love
The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was not random. It communicated across cultures:
 

• She appears as a mestiza woman: bridging Indigenous and Spanish identity.

• She stands before the sun and upon the moon: symbols familiar to the local people.

• She wears a black ribbon at her waist: a Nahuatl symbol of pregnancy.

• Her hands are folded in prayer: she is not God, but she carries God.
   

She came not to erase culture, but to redeem it.
Not to dominate, but to draw people into the love of Christ.

Within a decade of the apparition, millions embraced the Christian faith - not through force, but through encounter.

This is salus in action: healing, wholeness, and salvation woven together.

Why She Matters Today
Our Lady of Guadalupe is recognised as:

• Patroness of Mexico

• Patroness of the Americas

• A powerful defender of the dignity of human life

• A mother to the wounded, forgotten, and spiritually searching

Her feast day is celebrated on December 12.

But she is not simply a historical figure.

Her words to Juan Diego still echo:
 
“Am I not here, I who am your Mother?”

That question is the heart of her message.

Our ministry is founded under her patronage because her apparition reveals the kind of community we are called to build.

We believe that the tenderness shown on Tepeyac Hill in 1531 is not confined to history.

The Music Hidden in the Tilma

In the 20th century, researchers studying the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe made an intriguing discovery. When the placement of the stars on her mantle was mapped and translated into musical notation, the pattern produced a harmonious melody.

While this interpretation is not an official doctrine of the Church, many find it a beautiful reflection of the deeper symbolism of the tilma - that even the stars surrounding Our Lady point toward divine order and praise.
